NAACP Hosts Annual Academic Olympics for High Schoolers

A supervising physician at Northeast Valley Health Corporation in San Fernando, California, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, is an experienced obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) focused on providing compassionate care. A supporter of several social justice organizations, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

A leading civil rights organization in the U.S., the NAACP defends the legal rights and supports the advancement of African-Americans and other people of color. One of the youth programs the NAACP organizes is its Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO).

A year-long achievement program, ACT-SO aims to recruit, engage, and motivate African-American high schoolers to reach their full academic and cultural potential. Over the past 40 years, the program has accommodated nearly 300,000 youth participants. The event includes more than two dozen academic competitions in areas such as the humanities, business, science, engineering, math, and the arts. The goal of the program is for participants to build confidence and develop skills that will help them become productive members of society.
